The saliva of a dog.

On the authority of Abu Hurairah, The Prophet (May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon Him) said:

“If a dog drinks from one of your bowls then wash it seven times.”

(Narrated by both Al Bukhari and Muslim)

and in the narration by Muslim “the first of them with dirt.”

He also has the hadeeth of Abdullah bin Mugaffal where he said:

“If a dog slobbers in the bowl then wash it seven times, and complete it the eighth time with dirt.”

(Narrated by Muslim)

Benefits taken from the Hadeeth:

  1. The understanding that the drool of the  dog is something that is completely disgusting and impure. So much so, that even if it leaves on apparent traces of impurities it is still considered to be impure.
  2. That the drool of a dog, and like it is eating from a utensil, makes it naajis (or impure). They also make naajis that which is in it.
  3. The obligation of washing that which has been drooled in by the dog seven times.
  4. The obligation of using dirt one time. That which is best that the dirt is used with the first washing, this way the water comes after it. In the other hadeeth it is said to be done as the eighth washing. There is no difference between the water being used after the dirt, or the dirt being used after the water or if the dirt and water are mixed together, then it is used to wash the utensil. It is not enough that you mearly wipe down the spot with the dirt, rather then washing the whole of the utensil.
  5. The fact that those things that take the place of dirt, also take on their rulings. This is because the  point behind it is not the dirt, but rather cleanliness.
  6. The greatness of the legislation of this Nation, and that it was sent down from Allah. It is also shown that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) was not speaking according to his desires. This is seen because modern medicine has now verified that there are bacteria in the slobber of a dog that causes sickness and can not be removed with water alone.
